October 31st, before it became a capitalized venture, was one day in a month long festival that people have been celebrating for centuries. It was known as Samhain (Sa-wan) to the Gaels (Scotland and Ireland), a festival to celebrate the harvest and their ancestors. In fact, Halloween as we now call it was believed to be the day when the line between the realms blurred. For twenty-four hours, the dead had free passage on the earth. Relatives that had passed on could return to the homes they had known in their previous lives. It was a time of remembrance, honor, and danger. People accepted the day as a tradition but looked on warily, for with the blurring of the realms came not only the treasured spirits but the dark ones as well. Bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits and malevolent ghosts. It was the day of the fire festival. Fire rituals during this time were very important. These were used to determine fertility, a good marriage and even death. During this time, there was feasting, dancing, and frivolity.
Nowadays, a traditional staple to any Halloween is the Jack o’ Lantern. Children and parents alike gather around the table to hollow out a pumpkin and carve the ‘scariest face on the block’ into it. They are displayed in all of their horror on the front porches of homes. It is common to see the ghoulish lit faces of these pumpkins lighting the street like beacons to guide the passing. These symbols are traced in history as well. One of the key components to the beliefs surrounding Halloween in ancient times, were that of the faeries and the faerie realm. It was a great fear among the people that their children would be stolen by these beings. To abate these fears, children who were venturing outside were given turnips that had their middles carved out. They would be shaped into a picture of a demon face and lit from inside by a candle. This was given to them in the hopes that it would frighten away the evil spirits and deter the faeries from taking them.
The list goes on in regards to the similarities. One of our most popular holidays is grounded in history. So this year when you are getting your children ready to trick or treat, or are costuming up to go out to a party, take a moment to remember those who came before you. Who knows they may be standing right behind you.
