European Elections 2009

The just completed European elections had the predicted result. For example in Great Britain, like in other European Union countries that vote for the European Parliament, those in power lost. After the British scandal with Labor and some Conservative members of Parliament padding their pockets, the Labor and Conservative parties lost seats in the European parliament to the outsiders. More specifically, in Great Britain that meant that such parties as the right-wing British National Party gained. In fact, just about all opposition parties in Britain gained at the expense of the powerful. This is a natural phenomenon and was played out in most of the European Union countries. The European parliament is elected every five years. It loosely sets policy for all European Union members. Unfortunately, most of its decisions are economic in nature. Their control over what is imported and the quality of the product is manifest. As for political decisions; it is less powerful with member countries often going their own way, as they are doing now during the economic downturn. Let us remember Europe is not united in its entirety yet. Countries such as Great Britain still use their own currency, the pound sterling, instead of the Euro; the currency of the European Union. Nationalism is a strong idea. It is hard to imagine all of Europe being controlled completely by a parliament with people of varying nationalities. Some of the members, such as those in Eastern Europe are not as well off as those in Western Europe. The trend of history is to break into smaller nationalities like the old Soviet Union did, than it is to remain united. The United States being the rare exception to the rule.
