The Celebration of Easter In Europe
Easter, the Christian Holiday, is the culmination of 40 days of the Lenten season when fasting, abstinence and self-sacrifice is a prominent part of Lent. The week prior to Easter Sunday is, perhaps, one of the most involved in European countries, particulary Eastern European countries like Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and the Ukraine. To understand "Holy Week" as it is known, it's necessary to recall events of the life of Christ. Two weeks before Easter Sunday, marks "Passion Sunday". It's at this time when statues in churches are covered in purple, although in the US, churches now do this on Ash Wednesday. Palm Sunday is the traditional beginning of "Holy Week". It's the solemn Christian acknowledgment of the events leading up to the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. Thus, Tuesday of Holy Week is referred to "Maunday Tuesday", Holy Thursday is remembered by European Christians as the marking of "The Last Supper" followed by the most solemn day in the Christian calendar, "Good Friday". In earlier times, Christians maintained a very low profile, refraining from singing, dancing, or other more frivolous activities. During the hours of noon until 3 PM on Good Friday, Christians meditate on the 3 hours when Christ was crucified. In certain Eastern European countries, food prepared for the Easter celebration is brought to the local church to be blessed by their priest. Children often create colored eggs and women "Pysanka", gloriously decorated eggs with intricate and artful designs handed down for generations.
