| Valentine's Day throughout Europe
Valentine’s Day, named after St. Valentine, is a popular holiday celebrated, on February 14, in many countries throughout the world. It is customary in the United States and Canada to give chocolates, flowers, valentines, and other gifts to our family, friends, and sweet-hearts. While some European countries share these customs, other countries celebrated with different traditions. In Europe, most countries celebrate Valentine’s Day in a manner that reflects American celebrations. Germany and Austria’s traditions are identical to the United States. Spain holds a similar idea; the only difference is that women give gifts to their husbands while the men give their wives flowers. France and England celebrate in a less materialistic way. The French tend to be more romantic and make ‘cartes d’ amities’—elegant cards that profess one’s love to the recipient. Unmarried English women used to be superstitious on Valentine’s Day. They would wake up before sunrise to gaze out their windows. They believed the first man they saw was their future husband. This superstition, however, has faded and now the English stick to writing poems and sonnets for their loved ones. Women in Italy also shared the same superstition as English women, but unlike in England, Valentine’s Day is a day dedicated to engaged couples. It is traditional to either be engaged on Valentine’s Day or announce a couple’s engagement to their families and friends. While the above countries take a more conventional approach, other countries proceed into Valentine’s Day with a more playful tone. Scotland and Denmark are two of these countries. In Scotland, parties are thrown where single men and women meet and draw the opposite sex’s name from a hat. These “couples” then spend the remainder of the party together. The Danish send snowdrops to each other, which can be made of candy or from pressed white flowers, and also send poems. However, it is customary for men to send out gaekkebrev valentines. Gaekkebrev valentines are joking letters or poems sent to women, but do not bear the senders name-- instead, they are signed with a series of dots. If the receiver can correctly guess who sent the gaekkebrev, she will be given an Easter egg on Easter from the man. Valentine’s Day around the world is celebrated many different ways. Some countries take on a more serious note while other countries playfully celebrate. Regardless of where, or how, one celebrates, it is certain that Valentine’s Day is an important holiday to many. |
