MONTENEGRO
Montenegro, which is a small country located in the Southeastern portions of Europe, is a Serbian sovereign principality. It enjoys a coastal region along its border with the Adriatic Sea, while Croatia borders to the West, Serbia on the Northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina on the Northwest, Albania on the Southeast, and Croatia on the West.
Montenegro is the newest, sovereign, fully recognized nation in the world to date, as it gained independence in 2006. In 2006 it also became a member of the United Nations, and in 2007 it gained membership into the Council of Europe.
Montenegro has also been known by other names throughout the course of history, such as Crna Gora, Upper Zeta, Old Montenegro, The Highlands, Old Herzegovina, Old Serbia, Metohija, and Rashka. These name changes occurred with the countries borders were recalculated or under new governments or rulers.
Montenegrin Web A city with its name taken from the Montenegrin words meaning “Black Mountains”, Montenegro is a beautiful scenic country with wonderful tourism landscapes and agricultural sites. The internet services of Montenegro only began during the early parts of 2005 with the introduction of ASDL services towards the end of 2005. By May 2008, Montenegro began its first independent internet services by providing the .me extension and was considered a ‘national sunrise’ to the country’s internet status. As for interest, the scopes are few and limited as the internet in Montenegro is still at its infant stage of development. Most local sites are mainly industrial sites and investment sites. However, ever since July, 2008, the .me extensions have been reserved on the first-come-first-serve basis and most of the sites flow towards the tourism promotion of the country’s wonderful scenic areas. Though not popular, photography and similar interest sites are growing slowly as the focus is shifting towards the mountainous areas of Montenegro. There are still not much search engine providers within Montenegro and foreign search providers such as Yahoo! and Google are still preferred for their multi-lingual functions and wide coverage. Bloggers, writers and webmasters who are from Montenegro or are keen to write in or about Montenegro will not find many things to write as the internet growth is still beginning. However, revenues still are available in the form of tourism promotion and travelling agencies. As for the future growth of the internet in Montenegro, not much has been said by the Montenegro government but there are rumours on the increment of the .me extension for local webmasters.
